What degree do I need to be a business owner?

Some people simply aren't meant to work for other people. They do their best work when they are the business owner. It gives them a sense of freedom to run the business that they see fit. One of the bigger questions that people often wonder is "What type of degree do I need to have to become a business owner?" The truth is, for most businesses, you don't have to have one. The reality is, you should.

If you are going to pursue your dream of becoming a business owner, you will really need to get some formal education. Simply hanging up a sign and declaring yourself as a business is likely to land you in the unemployment line. It is an excellent idea to get a degree in business administration. This will help teach you what you will need to do in order to be an effective leader in your own business. You will want to learn how to deal with different personalities within the workplace, how to best manage your employees, and meet your own expectations for success. You may want to get a degree in accounting since you will want to be able to easily manage your capital and profits, as well as handle your losses. A college degree in marketing is also an excellent choice if you are going to become a business owner. Learning how to sell yourself, and your company, can be easily done with a marketing degree. You will learn how to advertise what you are selling and learn how to bring your product to the masses. Anyone can declare themselves a business owner and open up a Facebook page for exposure. Though it can be an excellent starting point, it's certainly not the best marketing and advertising tool that is available to you.

There are very few types of businesses that will require you to hold a college degree. A law firm is one of the only professions that require you to have a degree if you are the owner. However, it is always advisable to get at least a Bachelors Degree when you are going to be a business owner. If you have the time and means, keep going and work on getting a Masters Degree. Statistics regularly show that educated people typically earn more than uneducated people.
